Cameras and Lenses

8x5x or 10x

When I decided the brand of my new binoculars, Swarovski, I have doubts in the power....all my life I used 8x but in ocasions I think that a quite more power could be very good but.....the change is very big for my eyes??
I donīt know.

Regards.

There's not really a simple answer - there are pro's and con's of both sizes and in the end it's really personal preference. Higher magnification comes with higher shake but can give greater detail. I'm a 10x fan but I can understand why many prefer 8x.

Try both in a real world situation.

The effect of shaking surpasses the effect of higher magnification by far and a 10x will show you the same as the 8x, but 25% larger. It surely is a personal preference. There are good reasons, why standard bins are 8x nowadays. If you want to make out an obvious increase in detail, it makes more sense to have an additonal 12x for birding. Before posting this, I compared again my binoculars (7x, several 8x, several 10x, 11x, 12x and 15x).
