Like many people, I am in the market for a pair of 8x42 binoculars that satisfies the following requirements:
*lightweight (not necessarily compact)
*easy to hold for small hands
*long eye relief for glasses; twist-type eyecups
*around $300 or less in price
*relatively good quality control - I will be buying online so I don't have the luxury of trying out different pairs of the same model in store to choose the best one.
*waterproof/fogproof
*low glare, low CA, good clarity, low distortion
*wide range of focus including short focus
*tripod adaptability
Of course we want it all, don't we? ;-)
Through internet searches I have narrowed my selections of binoculars down to these:
(not in any order of preference)
1. Swift Audubon 828HHS 8.5x44. These are the only ones I have been able to try since a friend has a pair. Looked good.
2. Nikon Monarch 8x42 (the lightest in weight for the 8x42, but how is quality control? I've read they can be hit and miss. I tried the 10x42 at a sporting goods store and they seemed clear and sharp. What about CA issues?)
3. Celestron Noble 8x32 (inexpensive and nice light weight) OR Noble 8x42
4. Celestron Regal LX 8x42 (Found these at an online place with a decent reputation for $304, which seemed good for this model. 6' short focus, but the heaviest of the lineup. Is it a good glass, worth the extra ounce?)
The main problem I am encountering is much difficulty in finding local stores that carry any of the recommended models. So I haven't been able to try any of these specific models above except the Swift. I did try the 10x42 Eagle Optics Platinum Ranger and almost found it too sharp and caused some eye strain. They did not have the 8x42 in stock, but it was more expensive anyway, heading towards $400. I also tried and eliminated the Audubon Equinox HP 8x42 because there was significant shadowing on the sides when I used my glasses with them. The Equinox's focus was also definitely softer than that of the Ranger.
I am also concerned about the weight of the binoculars since I am going from a cheap pair of 10x25 Bushnells to these, which all weigh significantly more. Perhaps I should consider an 8x32 instead to reduce weight?
I would appreciate any thoughts or input. This decision would be a lot easier if I could find real stores that carried these modela so I could test them.
Thanks.
