better optics - Monarch or Alpen??

Hi,

Which model has the more clearer, better quality optics...the Alpen Wings ED
10 x 42 or Nikon Monarch ATB 10 x 42?

Is one model much better than the other, or is it minor?

Thanks!

both are reviewed at AllBinos: http://www.allbinos.com/allbinos_ra...king-10x42.html

the Alpen scores slightly higher, but these tests are really splitting hairs. Eyeballing the numbers, the Alpen has a slightly wider FOV, slightly better internal baffling (to deal with glare/reflection), handles chromatic aberration (color fringing) a tiny bit better, and has a better warranty. About half of the score difference between the two (4 out of 8 points delta) is because the Nikon truncates the exit pupils.

honestly, 99% of people likely couldn't tell a difference optically. It really depends how critical you are. Alpen tends to have good reviews for build quality too (Monarchs have kind of cheap feeling eyecups but otherwise have decent build). But among all these $300ish binoculars there are many good options where IMHO the differences in ergonomics, build quality and warranty outweigh the optical differences (which are fairly slight unless you are a hypercritical optics nut).

other good options to consider in that general price range which have solid reviews are the Eagle Optics Ranger, Zen-Ray ZRS HD, Pentax DCF-SP. You will also probably get recommendations for Bushnell Legend Ultra HD, which can be had dirt cheap right now thanks to a combination of sales and a $50 rebate program.

I've not tried either, but I'd personally go for something with ED glass versus without. Besides less CA, you should be able to see more subtle details, etc.
