Binoculars for Novices

Hello,
I don't really know much about birding. My husband and I just picked up a book and started casually checking off different species we've encountered. We're having a lot of fun even though we don't know much.

His birthday is coming up soon and I wanted to get him a pair of binoculars. We'll probably use them for birding as well as general purpose. I'm limited to a budget of US$50.

I read I should buy a pair of 7x50s. Do you agree? Also, what are your thoughts on autofocus? Seems convenient, but I wondered if there were ever moments when it's better for the user to have control.

I'm considering the following:
Bushnell 7x50 PermaFocus Focus-Free Wide-Angle Binoculars

Nikon 7x35 Action Ultra-Wide-View Binocular

Am I on the right track?

In advance, many thanks!
-Mdb

Hi Mrs Dunebuggy I see this is your first post, so may I welcome you on behalf of the Staff and Moderators.

I've moved your post to the Binocular Forum... there's experts hang out there and I'm sure you'll get some good advice from them
