I have a pair of Hawke 8 x 32 binoculars with Bak4 prismas and really like them.
However I was recently in Clas Ohlson in Liverpool (for those of you unfamiliar with the name it's a sort of Swedish Argos-type catalogue store) and noticed a pair of 10 x 42 waterproof, nitrogen filled, Bak4 prisms for £79.99. I had a good look through them and a fiddle around and decided to buy them as I had a voucher for £10 off if you spent over £60. They are really very good and as a pair of back-ups or car-boot bins or for someone on a tight budget they are ideal. The brand is "Asaklitt" which is their own badging.
They also sell a spotting scope with a 60mm objective lens for £69.99 that may not be quite as good quality, but worth a look as a first scope for a child since it's very light.
