Hi Forum members, I am hoping you can help with a question I have about alignment of the binocs. I have an older pair of 7x42 binocs that have been dropped unbeknownst by me (maybe a friend or kid). I wondered why the image never seemed as crisp and I could never completely get them focused just right. After some online reading, I did a test by focusing on a power line, then moving the binocs away from my eyes. I saw the power line separate and it became two power lines, one above and one below. Doesn't this confirm that the problem I have is collimation? I don't see any problems with the glass nor do I hear anything that might be broken on the inside, so I was thinking about mailing them in to see if this can be fixed.
I'll need to call the manufacturer, which is Bushnell, but they are an older pair of Bushnell's that they no longer make and they won't be covered under warranty. In fact, I can't imagine they will have parts, if needed unless generic. Anyway, my question is, what is involved in fixing the problem i described and how much should I expect to be charged? Last, would any local hobby shops have equipment to do this? Any other comments on the subject are appreciated. I don't want to waste money shipping them in if I'm wasting my time. If they do it for free, which I doubt, I'd only be out the shipping worst case scenario.
What model of Bushnell or Bausch & Lomb are they? Most of their medium price and higher end binos are covered by a lifetime warranty, and you just send them in with a check for $10 and they repair or replace. If any charges are involved they will send you an estimate.
