I am in need of new glasses, and was just wondering if any of the optics enthusiasts here have any preferences, thoughts or advice about eyeglass lens materials/designs/coatings - glass, plastic (CR-39), polycarbonate, Trivex, aspheric, etc.
FWIW I am moderately nearsighted (-3.25 diopter prescription).
Thanks.
Nearsighted - yipes - I'm farsighted and still have about +1.5 at the top of my progressive lenses. I always look thru the top portions of the glass when viewing thru my binocs - can't image what looking thru a stronger top lens would be like.
I'd almost think you'd be better off going somewhere that you can get a second pair for almost free, and get a single perscription for something in between and use it as dedicated for viewing thru binocs only.
I don't really have any problems using binoculars (with sufficient eye relief) with my glasses (it was certainly more convenient when I wore contact lenses, but my eyes don't seem to tolerate them as well as they used to.)
I was just thinking that given the scrutiny paid to all aspects of binocular lens designs and coatings and the like around here, some folks have maybe given some thought to things like the pros and cons of the various eyeglass lens materials available etc. - after all, we glasses wearers look through them a lot more than we do our binoculars!
