Greetings,
I am contemplating upgrading 8x42 Trinovid BA with a 10x42 unit, another Trinovid or something else.
Question, what are some pros/cons of 10x42 vs. 8x42?
I feel that 8x42 is such a huge and heavy unit that I might as well get more magnificationn out of it and better size efficiency.
I don't care about close up views, only distance viewing.
For one, a 10x42 will look and feel different from a 10x32, where the 8x are more similar.
For the far distant viewing, the hand shake becomes an issue. I can hold completely steady maybe 5 seconds at most, but then you collect enough info if you do this a minute or two.
Birds that are quite distant will look much the same as with 8x. There is an intermediate distance where the 10x is of some benefit. Close up again, there is not much benefit over 8x.
For winter birds, I use a scope 16x to 45x.

etc.,
Tero is right. But I, for one, have no problem at all with hand shake, and so, prefer 10s to 8's (overall) for the same reasons that pique your curiosity. I also use 8s when I'm interested in a wider fov and greater depth of field, such as woodland birding. Quite frankly, the cognitive difference in magnification is not that great unless compared side by side. I'd recommend some field trials before laying down your hard earned dollars.
Cheers,
Robert
