I was thinking about getting pair of premium roofs for quite a while. After looking through all of them i decided that i will stay with 10x42.
Then, i tried to compare them side by side.
I liked the ergonomics of the EL, but i did not like the colors and contrast, and i could not live with the slow focus. I liked the view through the SLC better than the EL, but i did not like the cold heavy metal feel of them. I liked the view of 8.5x EL very much, but they are a bit too big in size, and i am sure that i would want more magnification sometimes.
I could not hold the Trinovids steady because of their bulky shape.
I loved the colors and contrast and the feel of the focuser of the Nikon LX/HG, but did not like holding them. I did not find the Zeiss FL brighter or better than the Ultravids. I wish that the Ultravids had a softer feel to the focuser.
I also tried the 10x32 Zeiss (i hated them), and the 10x32 Ultravid and Nikon LX (both nice but not much of a depth of field, and i could tell that they were dimmer than the 42mm models), and the 32mm EL (great handling, poor image)
Whatever, i guess that the Ultravid 10x42 is closest to what i want, so i will buy one. I did not notice any unpleasant edges, but i did not pay attention. I still think that a pair of 9x35 EL with HD lenses would be the best, and i would pay $2000 for it.

Otto,
Normal wear should improve the Leica focuser. Leica tolerances are very tight and they use no lubrication. The Ultravid is superbly engineered and its diopter mechanism is simply unbeatable.
