What are the contenders for the ideal 8 - 15yr old's bins?
How about a decent brand 7x35 porro with large fov/dof (easy focus and location of subject) for under UKP100? Would a cheap waterproof roof be a better choice?
Mine all use second-hand Zeiss Jenoptems 8x30 - available for £30-70 depending on condition.
