Greetings!
Preparing for a springtime birding trip this weekend, I dragged out all my mid-to-high-end binoculars and did a side-by-side comparison in the back yard for several hours earlier today. My goal? To select the perfect set of binoculars for my trip. Among the pairs tested were:
Nikon HG 8x32
Leica Trinovid BN 7x42
B&L Discoverer 10x42 Roof
Pentax SP 10x50
Brunton Echo 8x32
Zeiss Victory 8x20
Nikon HG 10x25
Swarovski EL 8x32
Minox BR 8x32
B&L Discoverer 7x42 Roof
Brunton Lite-Tech 8x25
Rugged Exposure 10x25 Roof
Barska 10x42 Waterproof Roof
Leica Trinovid BN 8x32
I wanted to select a small set of binoculars for the trip that would all fit inside of a 1300 size (approx. 11"x10"x7") Pelican case - with enough room left over for a Nikon Monarch 6x waterproof laser rangefinder. After playing around with the case and binoculars for a while, I figured out that I could fit 2 full-size and 1 compact pair of binoculars in the case, along with the rangefinder and foam padding.
After extensive testing, making a decision, doing a "what if...", re-testing, rinse, lather, repeat... I finally found the perfect set of binoculars for the trip. This is what I finally decided upon:
Pentax SP 10x50
Leica Trinovid BN 7x42
Nikon HG 10x25
I would happily travel the world with this combination - and never feel like I should have brought something else... for my needs this selection is absolutely perfect! All 3 binoculars, plus the laser rangefinder all fit inside of the Pelican case, with JUST enough room to spare for the neck straps and foam padding around each instrument.
Take this information for what it's worth - what works for me might not work for you!
Best wishes,
Bawko
That seems like a reasonable roundup to me. I am curious though, on a birding trip, what purpose does the laser rangefinder serve?
