Dont have much to spend, perhaps up to £50 or so. Nobody ever seems to review binoculars at this price so it's hard to know which would be the best option.

There are I'm afraid hundreds of units in this range - the way to whittle them down is to go for a known brand and to apply a group of requirements...ie do you wear glasses / do you require single or double hinge. Do you want a waterproof pair?
Eg Opticron do several along the spec you mention so try their website. There are bargains to find with other makes such as Nikon - Olympus - Pentax.

Microglobe is selling Nikon 8x25 sportstars for £47. I bought a pair and they are my "carry around all the time when not birding" bins. They are very good for the price, small and will fit in a pocket or small bag.
