I'm about to buy my first pair of binoculars having held off for about 6 months, going out with a mate and using his Opticrons.
I'm undecided between:
Bushnell Elite 8x43
Nikon HG 8x42
Zeiss FL 8x42
What do people think? Which should i go for? Are the Zeiss and Nikon really worth the extra cash?

well that's splashing out. Go somewhere try a few different pairs and see what you think.
Are the Zeiss and Nikon worth the extra? Try 'em and see but compare to the Swaro and Leica.
