New bins advice

Hi all,

Im looking for some advice on buying a new pair of binoculars. I've currently got a pair of visionary 8x42 porro's which set me back a whole £20. They've been a good starter set but seem to be rather cloudy and are a bit of a workout.

Im looking for a lighter set of preferably roof prism binoculars and would like 10 x 50. im looking to spend no more than £250 but i've no idea where to start really.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Andy

Hi Andy,

I should own up and say I've tried very few 10x50 roofs.

One pair, in budget, you might consider is the Nikon Monarch. The 10x42 is 610g, but the 10x56 is 1150g... virtually twice the weight. There has been praise on the forum for the Hawke Prostalk ED. It can be found for about £275, but again quite heavy at 1096g. There are lighter pairs around like the cheaper 780g Barr & Stroud Sierra 10x50. I've tried some of the smaller models and they were OK, but I suggest a step below the Nikon and Hawke.

I'm guessing a bit, but I'm supposing the Visionary £20 will will have limited, if at all lens coating. 30% or more of the light entering the pair with either be lost, or worse, bounce around inside reducing contrast. A better £250 pair like the Hawke Frontier ED 10x42, will have better contrast, be brighter than the Visionary, as well as having lower chromatic aberration and wider field of view. I suggest you try to track down a few 10x50s and 10x42s and see what suites your needs best.

David
