Hi, I would like to ask any forum members who have experience in evaluating binoculars and who have actually owned and used several brands.
If you had £600 to spend on a new (not used) 7 or 8x42 binocular what would you buy and why? What would be your second choice?
I am considering Meopta Meostar B1 7 or 8x42. Or perhaps the Opticron DBA S Coat 8x42. Ive never owned a 7x42 before but feel the benefits of steady image wide field and better depth of field, brightness etc outweight the loss of x1.
Binoculars I've owned:
Leica Trinovid 10x32 BN
Opticron Countryman 8x42
Pentax DCF SP 8x32 (current)
Thanks![]()
You already have an 8.
Everybody who wants to have a small collection of binoculars and can afford a decent one should have a 7 x 42. Just because of it's versatility, as you alluded to above. It also has long eye relief if you wear glasses. You can use it comfortably anywhere in the world: At home looking at your feeders, on board a rocking boat, in the rain forest, in the mountains or on the savannahs, in poor light conditions. It is a "Jack of all trades" and a master of a few of them!
Get the 7 x 42 Meopta. I have a Leica 7 x 42 Trinovid. If I were required by some law to get rid of all of my binoculars but one I would keep that one.

"You can have my binoculars when you pry them out of my cold dead hands!"
Thanks for your advice Bob I appreciate it.
Currently I only own an 8x32 pentax dcf sp (which I think is a nice binocular). I sold my 8x42 a while back. Im very impressed with what im reading about the meopta meostar and I think I will probably take your advice and go for that in 7x.
I once had a Trinovid 10x32BN and thought the image was fantastic but the main reason I sold it was because I felt the ocular lenses steamed up too much in inclement weather with the heat of my face and I found that frustrating. But I now regret selling it!
Cheers. Brendan.
