Phase Coating

Could someone explain what phase coating is and its value over non-phase coated optics?

I'll try. In a simple way, it realigns the light that is split by the roof prism design, correct? In a more complex way, well, someone else will have to comment, and surely will.

Phase coated optics appear to have higher contrast and sharpness then the non-phase coated equivalent. Phase coating corrects for a fault inherent in roof prisms compared to Porro-prisms, hence improving performance. In techie terms, it corrects for a phase shift in the light path. (Well, not that techie an explanation ...)
