Please, What is a 'STAR TEST' ?

I’ve seen many technical postings by writers more knowledgeable than me, where they discuss “star tests” carried-out on bins and scopes. I don’t know what a star test is, so please would somebody help out and explain how it is carried-out, what to look for, and what characteristics of an optical device that such a test can reveal?
I’ve noticed that glasses described by other writers as ‘good’ in a star test are also the models which I personally find to have nice sharp optics and ‘Discovery Channel Image Quality’, but I don’t know what the connection is.
Your knowledge would be appreciated.
