Quick Take on the Zeiss 8x32 FL and Nikon 8x32 EDG I

I picked up a Nikon 8x32 EDG I for cheap($750.00 off E-bay) so I thought I would write a quick review while I had them both before Albino's does. The Zeiss 8x32 FL and the Nikon 8x32 EDG are really close in optical quality. And the ergonomics are great on both. The Zeiss FL has the advantage in that it is a little lighter ,whereas, the EDG I has the open frame which is nice for holding with one hand. I can't fault either ones focus or diopter controls once you get used to them. The Nikon's twist out eyecups are nice in that they have 4 stops so you almost always find a perfect position for your eyes. The Nikon's coatings give a little warmer hue to the view whereas the Zeiss is a little colder. So it depends on what you like. And of course typical of Nikon the focus, diopter, IPD, and eyecups are all buttersmooth. FOV is about the same on both. I have had no problems with the diopter on the Nikon as some people have complained about in other threads. Eyecaps on the objectives work great on the EDG. I haven't had a bit of a problem with them falling off so I don't know what all the complaining was about and the rainguard is fine. The Nikon does not have any coating like Lotutec on them so they do not shed water like the Zeiss and they are harder to clean. Straps and accessories are good on both the Zeiss and the Nikon. The biggest advantage of the Nikon EDG and the one area that would put it ahead of the Zeiss when Albino's test it will be it's totally sharp field right to the edge.(Is that why they are called EDG's?). Nikon seemed to be able to do this without the rolling ball effect of the Swarovision so I actually like them better than the Swarovision's. The resolution on-axis looks very close even though I had thought before the Zeiss FL was a little sharper. But comparing them side by side it appears about the same. VERY SHARP! Overall if you can get the Nikon EDG I for less than $1K in the 8x42 or 8x32 they have to be the best buy out there in an alpha binocular. The big advantage again of the EDG is again they are totally sharp across the WHOLE field to the edge and they don't have rolling ball like the Swarovision's. Pretty much perfect binoculars.

So those "circus mirrors better know as field flatteners" make for a pretty much perfect binocular. It is truly amazing how much better a particular model of binocular becomes once it's in your possession

Dennis:

Good to hear your review. It is nice to see you posting again, without trying to be
a "shock jock". That has turned some off, and so may just disregard your remarks.

I agree with your review of the EDG vs. the Zeiss. I have had both versions of the EDG 8x32, and they are top rate. I have had the Zeiss FL 8x42, and have not a direct comparison, with the 8x32. The Nikon has done it very well, with great edges, and that
is what gives the EDG, the advantage over the Zeiss FL. I suppose until we see some
new models from either Zeiss, or Swaro. in the 32mm class, the EDG has the top model in my mind.
If we take a look at the Allbinos review of the 10x42, the EDG is #1. The others in the EDG model line seem to follow right along. And we know, then it does come down to personal preference.
