My gear is currently:
Nikon 10x50 Binocs
Sibley's Guide to Birds of Western America
What should I add or replace?
An 8x binoculars with 43mm maximum size lens!
Why? Quality image and weight! :)

I usually keep Sibley's in the car and take Peterson's in the field--because of size. I think you should consider a 8x42 binocular. Right now, while supplies last, a great value is the Leupold Cascades porro CF 8x42 at Optics Planet for $218.15. The Cascades bino has internal focusing and is 100% waterproof. The Cascades also has the greatest sweep spot in the center of the FOV. Another value is the Nikon Action Extreme 8x42 porro CF.
