Re-stating the obvious

This may be long known by everybody, but in case it helps...

Whenever I use binoculars, I first look around for something solid to use as a rest. When looking at bluebirds and bunnies in my yard, I use the deck railing or a feature on my house to steady the binoculars.

Specifically, I lightly rest the lower edges of the objectives against the deck railing. Also, I rest one or both knees on the deck floor.

If nothing suitable is available in a timely manner, I simply lean my shoulder or back against a firm object.

Maybe I drink too much coffee, but these seem to help me.

I do this too, mostly when I need a little more resolution - and it does help, even with only 8.5X (Swift Audubon 820 ED Porro). You may also see me sitting on my backside on the grass, with my knees propping up my elbows (at least in the summer when I'm not risking catching my death of cold as a result!)

I cheat and use Canons with IS, although to be honest the IS doesn't help with wind buffeting.
