Vortex Uni-Daptor Tripod Adapter for Binoculars

Hmmm, so do I post this in the bino forum or the tripods and heads forum

quote:
The unique, quick-release design of the Vortex Uni-Daptor lets you easily mount your binocular on a tripod or car window mount for extended periods of glassing. When you switch to free-hand glassing, there's no need to remove the Uni-Daptor from your binocular. The slim, lightweight design of this binocular adapter won't get in the way—or poke you in the chest. Designed and made in the United States by Jim White, the Uni-Daptor uses high quality machining and construction for a strong, secure fit.

See the site for photos.

First photo: There's a rod (the "unit") and a "base" and a Allen bolt.

Second photo: The "unit" has one end that's bolted to the 1/4" tripod mounting thread on the bin with a Allen bolt.

Third photo: The "base" attaches to "your favorite" QR plate with (what looks like) a 1/4" threaded hole.

Fourth photo: Mount the QR plate with the base on the tripod and then drop the unit attached to the bin into the base. Looks like there is a spring loaded ball bearing to lock it in place until you pull on it to remove it.

See also the photo at Eagle Optics who have it for $35.

Interesting idea. Especially for higher magnification bins on tripods or monopods.

There wass one of these set up on a Vortex Kibab 15x56 at the Winter Wings festival here last weekend. Looks just like you would expect it to look from the photos on the website.

Advantage it that the binocular can be detached from the tripod and with the uni-adapter part left on the binocular, there is less intereference with packing the glass without removing the entire tripod adapter. Disadvantage (maybe) more than one QR adapter and uni-adapter base if you use the same tripod for two or more.

Did you get your hands on it, Steve?

How did it feel to take the "unit" on and off the "base"? A solid click?

I presume they're not expecting people to wear the bins as that unit looks like it might poke a hole in your sternum given a chance.
