I purchased an additional second Zeiss Victory 8x20, they are that good. The idea was to give the first pair(6-years old without dielectric prism coatings) to my son for B-day gift. This way I could upgrade to the newer dielectric coatings with the wifes blessing.
Problem, the old pair actually does better on the resolution chart, even though the newer pair are noticeably brighter. The newer pair with dielectric coatings does not allow the right tube to adjust to a crisp view using the diopter wheel. The view is jut better(clearer) from the older non-dialectric pair.
Question: is this enough of a reason to return for warranty repair or request replacement or did I just get a 'cherry pair' the first time due to sample variation ie luck of the draw. What is a good enough reason for a return?
Good enough is not "Good Enough"
This is sure a reason to be disappointed with your new purchase. It seems that you and most were lead to believe that the "new" improved version with the di-electric coatings would be better than the former version, or why would they introduce it.
You had the advantage of comparing them directly, as most do not.
I am thinking you got a substandard pair and would request replacement. Warranty repair
may find it within spec. and you will not be pleased.
The problem with optics this good, as the new changes may be slight and incremental, so
it may be hard to see the difference.

Right. If you have an unimpeachable basis for comparison, which you do, then I'd ask for a replacement — not a repair. What you have is not good enough.
