Which 10X?

In an effort to temporarily complete a relatively well rounded selection of binocular sizes I am going to pick up a 10X binocular preferrably with either a 42 or 50 mm objective. My only real limitations are price and location of purchase. I have a large gift certificate for the local Sporting Goods retailer and would prefer to keep the cost under $500 US. (I am planning on saving up over the next year to pick up either a 10x42 LX or 10x42 SE.)

My list of choices includes the following....

quote:
Bushnell Legend Binoculars $319.99 Black 10 x 42

711023 Bushnell Legend Binoculars $149.99 Black 10 x 50

711294 Leupold Wind River Mesa Binoculars $219.99 Black 10 x 50

711535 Leupold Wind River Olympic Binoculars $379.99 Black 10 x 50

712024 Nikon Action Extreme Binocular 10X50 $179.99 Black 10 X 50

711529 Nikon Monarch Camo 10X42 Binocular $299.99 Realtree Camo 10 x 42

711324 Nikon Sporter I Binoculars $199.99 Black 10 x 36

711743 Pentax DCF HR II Binocular 10X42 $299.99 Black 10 X 42

712239 Pentax PCF WP II 10X50 $179.99 Black 10 x 50

Any thoughts on any particular model or reasons to stay away from one or another? Any help would be appreciated.

Greetings!

I would start by scratching the Pentax DCF HRII off the list... those are REALLY bad.

Best wishes,
Bawko

If you already know that you are saving for a year to buy a premium binocular, then anything you buy now should be (IMO) kept to a minimum price tag. (After all, why spend a small fortune on something you know will not be used much after only one year?)

In the meantime, you will still want a good, high quality image so to maximize the "bang for your buck" you should buy a good porro prism glass in the $150 range. Included in this list might be the Bushnell Legend, B&L Discoverer, Pentax PCF WP, Leupold WindRiver, Nikon Tundra, etc. etc. etc.
